Revealing Your Best Skin: The Benefits of Medical Grade Skin Peels
I’ve been running my own private aesthetic practice for 14 years now and I have to say; skin peels are still my most favourite treatment.
Peels in the right hands are safe, extremely effective and affordable.
They’re like an old loyal friend that always comes up trumps and delivers on their promise.
Sadly some people seem to fear them, but if you choose an experienced practitioner who uses safe, high quality reputable products and knows how to select the right peel and grade for your specific skin concern, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
In the cosmetic remit, peels have come a long way over the decades.
Gone are the days of the risk of permanent skin damage, discolouration and extreme down time periods.
Things have luckily evolved for the better.
A word of warning though:
-
Never buy a peel online to use at home. This is when you can get into hot water!
-
Choose a registered medical professional who will ‘only’ work with FDA approved peels, direct from medical stockists.
So what are skin peels?
In very basic terms peels contains a blend of different acids used to remove and exfoliate the outer layers of dead skin to reveal a brighter, glowing, smoother refined complexion.
The type of acid used depends on the depth of the peel needed and the specific skin concern.
Common acids used include - Salicylic, Lactic, Mandelic, Glycolic, Kojic, Azelaic and TCA to name a few.
Light Superficial Peels
These affect the outermost layers only - the epidermis.
These are the mildest peels with the least down time, but still way more stronger and impactful than what you would receive at beautician level.

-

The process
The peel is usually applied and washed off after 10-12 mins. In some circumstances we select a clear peel that stays on the skin until morning.
The aftercare is pretty minimal other than being cautious to not use any active products for the following week.
You’ll feel ok to go to work etc.
You can wear makeup the following day, but I think the less product the better so there’s less skin interference.
It’s very gradual in the way the skin peels.
It will keep slowly working throughout the week, and as it peels it will resemble more like bumps and dryness, you may get the odd break out if anything is lurking under the skin, but it should clear quickly.
Day 1
No changes other than slight sensitivity.
Day 2
Skin may be pinky and starting to get dry
Day 3
Visible dryness, you may get small bumps under the skin
Day 4
Pretty much the same as day 3. The skin may feel more oily.
Day 5
Less dry, you will see the skin texture beginning to improve
Day 6
The dryness will be clearing and the overall skin texture and tone will be improving.
Day 7
The process is over and the skin will continue to get better.
Medium Depth Peels
(The only depth I will go to in clinic)
Medium Depth Peels are able to penetrate deeper into the upper part of the dermis.
This means it can work harder and deeper on concerns such as sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles.
The peel I choose to work with is great, because as well as the blend of acids, it also contains glutathione, a powerful anti oxidant which neutralises free radical damage from UVA/B and environmental toxins.
It also helps to inhibit melanin production, so works well in treating pigmentation.
Results you can expect
-
Softening of lines and wrinkles
-
Tighter skin
-
Brighter smoother skin
-
Reduction in pigmentation
-
Clearer skin
-
plumper skin
-
Refined texture and tone
The process
As medium peels are deeper, you can expect more down time in terms of visible peel, but not in length of time.
If you’re the self-conscious type, you may want to lay low. I’m pretty open about what I have, so I just laugh it off and go about my business.
You will be dry for 6-7 days and most of your peeling will happen on day 3 and 4 post peel.
The best way to describe it, is it ‘sheets off’.
It’s very tempting to want to pull, as it feels like peeling cling film, revealing tight, bright skin underneath, but you receive STRICT aftercare instructions not to.
There’s usually more after-care involved in a medium peel.
For instance with my peel of choice you have to use home care retinol wipes for 2 nights after and a specific moisturiser.
I always advise against wearing make up with deeper peels, let it do it’s job without interference.
Once you’re through the process at day 6 and 7 you can go back to normal.
Day 1
The peel is applied and stays on the skin until the following morning. You will look flushed and as the peel is a brown colour you will look tanned.
Day 2
You can wash the peel off with plain water, no soaps or moisturisers are to be used. You will look flushed and pinky.
Day 3
This is when the peeling starts. It usually starts around the mouth, slowly spreading outwards as you’re in day 4
Day 4
Still peeling, still sensitive looking
Day 5
New skin appears and you begin to see how it’s taking shape
Day 6
Peeling is over, but the skin can still appear dry.
Day 7
The process is complete, but the results will continue to get better over the weeks ahead.
To summarise
Whether you choose a light or medium depth peel, your skin will look better generally.
I would say the worse the condition of the skin, for instance if you’ve never peeled, used a retinol or an acid face wash. The more you may peel, the greater the skin build-up will be to come off.
Regardless of how you peel, the results will be the same.
Brighter, tighter, smoother glowing skin.
A softening to fine lines and wrinkles and a reduction in visible pore size.
Your skin will feel beautiful when you apply your makeup. No dragging.
